Gas and Renewables: Europe’s Path towards Energy Security

Europe is currently facing challenges in balancing its energy needs due to ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Natural gas storage levels are around 34 percent, far below the EU’s goal of 90 percent.
While Italy’s storage is relatively better at 45 percent, countries like Germany and France are struggling with lower levels, affecting their energy security.
Dependence on renewable energy alone is insufficient, especially during winter when demand peaks. This has highlighted the importance of having reliable energy supplies.
A ceasefire in Ukraine could improve the gas situation, but Europe must continue prioritizing stable energy sources.
North Africa, particularly Algeria, is positioning itself as a strong clean energy supplier thanks to its solar capacity.
Italy has already established strong energy ties with Algeria particularly in the gas sector, demonstrating a proactive approach to ensure energy security.
